About us

The National Zakat Foundation (NZF) is an endeavour by Mercy Mission to engage some of the most disenfranchised elements of our society. Using a knowledge-led approach, we work with local communities to educate and energise Muslims into proactively helping themselves and the society in which they live.

Through channelling the Zakat of the Muslims upon whom the obligation applies, we aim to address some of the core socio-economic problems and needs of those members of the community, which typically are left behind. Homelessness, hunger and crippling debt have an enormous impact on elements of our community, to which we are typically unawares.

With this in mind, NZF will seek to not only bring to your attention the genuine causes in need of support, but furthermore enable you to meet their needs and support those individuals who currently stand holding out their hand to become the people who too can contribute to the fund. Our ultimate goal is to ensure there is no one eligible for Zakat in this country, and we are eager to pursue this through a three-tiered approach:

  • Engagement with core social stakeholders, notably front line community organisations and active charitable organisations

In order to ensure optimal efficiencies are achieved in serving the needs of those most in need, our model is based on working with grass roots organisations and empowering them with access to the funds collected by the foundation for those that eligible for the Zakat.

  • Zakat On Demand

This is an endeavour to ensure those who are in need are able to access the resources they need immediately. Working to ensure the basic needs of food and shelter are honoured from within the community for those who have no other support, we wish to help Muslims retain their integrity by calling upon only what is rightfully there’s.

  • The development of sustainable grass-roots programs

These programs will be wealth creating and enable recipients to mature business models, which invest directly into the community in which recipients live.

In doing the above, we hope to inspire individuals and communities at large to be exemplary Muslims, leading to the emergence a society in which Muslims play an active role in contributing to the welfare and betterment of all social stakeholders.
