"Alms are for the poor and the needy; and those employed to administer (the funds); for those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to truth); for those in bondage and in debt; in the cause of Allah; and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by Allah, and Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom" [Al-Qur'an 9:60]
The National Zakat Foundation (NZF) seeks to redistribute the wealth of the Muslims in this country who are in extreme need of support from the community. The NZF has created a three tier model which will allow them to help Muslims in the local community. This involves the following:
1. Direct Case Load:
The number of people living below the poverty line in this country is shocking. Poverty and debt are part of a vicious cycle, and it is their responsibility of the Muslim community to assist those trapped in these circumstances. The Messenger of Allah, said:
"Do not turn away a poor man...even if all you can give is half a date. If you love the poor and bring them near you...Allah will bring you near Him on the Day of Resurrection" [Al-Tirmidhi]
The NZF have identified people who are in desperate need of financial support, and are eligible for Zakat. These are individuals who will be meeting the criteria of being able to access Zakat wealth, and are in desperate need of your support.
Please find below case studies of just some of the people on our system at present. Names have been changed to protect identities.
2. Direct Referral Points:
There are a number of phenomenal organisations working at grass-roots level which are successful in their endeavours because they understand and know their local community, and are aware of the circumstances and needs of individuals in their community. They have a reputation for responding sensitively to those who are in the greatest difficulty.
Despite their excellent reputation, these organisations struggle to cope with the increasing demands of the under-privileged members of society. The NZF are collaborating with a select, but growing portfolio of partners who will be able to access funds when necessary.
The system is very simple, whereby when one of our partners find someone who meets the Zakat criteria, they will refer that person to the NZF and help them apply for funds.
This model allows grass-roots organisations to focus on doing what they do best, which is to empower Muslims who are in need of assistance and encourage them to become self-sufficient once again.
3. Self-Referral:
We realise that Muslims spread out all of the country, and so may not have access to a local Muslim community who could assist them. It is for this reason that we have created a self-referral portal, which will allow Muslims to submit an application for funds, which will then be assessed based on the information they provide. This direct support will ensure that all Muslims in need have the opportunity to apply for financial assistance.
