All applications for Zakat requires a completed Zakat application form.

You are eligible for receiving Zakat if you live in the UK and fulfil one or more of the following:

  • You have difficulty paying for your day to day needs and that of your dependants.
  • If you are single and unable to get married due to lack of financial means.
  • If you are a new Muslim who needs financial support to study Islam or means of livelihood.
  • If you have a debt incurred in a halal way, and doing your best to pay it, but being unable to do so.
  • You are a student requiring help to pay off debts incurred for living costs.
  • You are part of an Islamic organisation that supports under-privileged and handicapped people and need support for your organisation.
  • You are part of an Islamic organisation working to defend the perception of Islam in your community and in the media.

We treat all applications for Zakat in the strictest confidence

Information supplied by the applicant will only be seen by the National Zakat Foundation's shurah. We may need to show application forms to auditors, the Charity Commission or the Law Agencies, but this is upon request.

General

  • A formal letter applying for funds that is signed by hand. Emails or electronically printed documents are not acceptable. This letter does not have to be in any particular format and can be hand-written but it should be addressed to the National Zakat Foundation and not to any individual in the foundation.
  • A letter of recommendation or a character reference from a respectable member of society. This can be anyone who is well-known in the local community or a personal friend. In the latter case we need verifiable proof of identity.
  • Proof of residence at the address, e.g. a utility bill, driving license, bank statement etc., that shows that the applicant lives at the stated address.
  • A description of expenses and financial situation. This is needed to evaluate how much to allocate in relation to other applicants and the priority with which to treat the application.
  • Bank statements over a period of time that shows the financial situation and any supporting paperwork such as creditor’s notices, council letters, legal summons. These can be photocopies.

 

Students

  • A formal letter applying for funds that is signed by hand. Emails or electronically printed documents are not acceptable. This letter does not have to be in any particular format and can be hand-written but it should be addressed to the National Zakat Foundation and not to any individual in the foundation.
  • If you are an overseas student then you need to send us a photocopy of your passport showing the VISA to stay in the UK and study.
  • Your bank statement over a period of time that shows your financial situation with respect to your ability to pay for your expenses.
  • A description of your expenses.
  • A letter of recommendation from your professor or tutor who should be prepared to answer any queries we may have about you.
  • A letter from the admissions tutor confirming that you are enrolled on the course.
  • Requests for Zakat will not be considered unless a request is submitted in the proper manner and all necessary paperwork is in hand.
  • Applicants for Zakat may be supported with an amount of non-repayable Zakat money and some in the form of an interest free loan. This will be clarified with the applicant once the application has been approved.
  • An application for Zakat does not automatically guarantee approval. Consideration of applications is based on available finances and current applicants.
  • It is possible for the same applicant to request for funds again but not in the same year.
